Stay Big >> Help Others

Recently, I have been working on thinking more like a CEO and less like an agent. My mentor told me to start putting it out there, so I wanted to share it with all of you. And, I would love to hear what you are working on right now.

As part of the journey of sharing more, below is a story from three years ago that started a major transformation in my life. I have known almost all of you since then, so each of you have played a role whether you were aware of it or not. I thought it would be fun for you to know how much our work together has inspired me and been crucial in my growth as a person.

It was October of 2014. I stood in the front entry of an agent’s home looking at a check made out to me for $500 for a rental I helped with. She turned to me and said, “I talked to my husband and we really feel like we should only pay you $250.” Stunned, I silently handed the check back to her. She scurried back into the kitchen, scribbled a new check, shoved it in my hand and out the door I went.

Numb, I drove to a goal review meeting with my mentor. (I was supposed to be selling homes not leasing them.) He took one look at me, shut his laptop and asked, “Are you ok?”

The answer was no. And that is the moment that set me on the path I am on now. I was living an unfulfilled life, going through the motions of work, dinners, school functions, meetings, and working out but all with no deeper meaning. In that moment at the agent’s house, I did not stand up for myself or speak my truth. My voice was so buried that I couldn’t even hear it, and when I started looking for it, it was hard to find.

Since that experience, I have worked (and still work) daily to bring meaning to everything in my life. All of you have been a part of this journey and have helped me learn how to bring meaning into my work, my relationships, and into the houses I have helped you buy and sell. I share this because I think we all have moments where the situation or life gets bigger than we are. It is important to remember that there is nothing that happens on this Earth that is bigger than us. We all have the power and mental strength to stand up for ourselves, nourish our bodies and souls, and support those around us—even when we don’t know that we are doing this for others.

You probably didn’t realize the profound positive impact you had on me. I am so grateful that we are walking on a similar path together.

Much love,
Kris
